In Southern Vietnam, the Mekong Delta is home to myriad attractive destinations and unique ecosystems that deserve more than a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City.

The River Mekong unravels into nine rivers, creating the fertile Delta as nowadays. Daily life in the delta flows with the ever-changing waters, rice fields are dug as the waters recede and fisheries thrive throughout the annual flood. Considered as the “Rice bowl” of Vietnam, Mekong Delta River brings the magic inside that appeals to all those who have come to this immense land.

The Mekong Delta is completely focused around the water, which explains why the only way to navigate this region is by boat. You will see rice paddies, fruit orchards, and floating markets, Buddhist temples and family houses clinging to the river’s banks.

The Mekong Delta is considered “the rice bowl of Vietnam”. It yields a large amount of fresh produce for the country. During the trip to this region, you will see flourishing agricultural trade at one of the most famous floating markets – Cai Rang. This floating market is a magnet for tourists with cameras.

Cai Rang floating market is one of the biggest ones in Vietnam, which is about 6km from Can Tho. Boats are filled with fresh watermelons, tiny dugouts carry pigs, and barges overflow with pineapples. The local hawkers with conical hats on their heads yell their prices whilst packing greasy foil packets. A Cai Rang appears in front of travelers authentically like that.

Coming here early in the morning will give you a chance to see the best of the market. For the best vantage point, you can make use of a traditional boat to go through the market, and watch locals trading the produce with each other.

 

Cai Rang floating market – one of the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta is a rare sight in that you just only find out the beautiful lifestyle trade when you travel in the unique Wetlands in the south of Vietnam. DAY 01: HCM – MY THO – BEN TRE – CAN THO ( L )
Start your day with an 8:30 AM pick-up from your centrally located hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. Then head to the city of My Tho by bus. During the 1.5-hour bus drive to My Tho, learn about the cultures of the local people and enjoy the nice scenery of green rice fields. Visit Vinh Trang pagoda, the biggest pagoda in Mekong Delta.

Continue to My Tho and take a boat trip along Mekong River. During the cruise, see fish cages and floating houses on the river. The boat will take you to a small canal, where you can escape the busy town. The cruise through the coconut trees lined canal will take you to a coconut island in Ben Tre.

Disembark, walk around the village and visit a local family to enjoy tropical fruit, taste honey tea, honey wine and listen to Vietnamese traditional music, performed by the villagers. Continue walking on the village’s road to a coconut candy shop to learn how to make candy and see some handicrafts made from coconut trees. Take a walk through the village and discover many kinds of fruits, flowers, trees, and local houses. Take your time and take nice photos while enjoying the natural scenery. Then, head to a local restaurant and enjoy a local Vietnamese lunch under the tree shade.

After lunch, have free time to walk or bike around the village, then travel by ferry and bus to Can Tho, the heart of Mekong Delta.

Day 02: CAN THO – CAI RANG FLOATING MARKET( B, L)
After having breakfast, take a leisurely boat trip to explore the picturesque tributaries of the Lower Mekong river.

After, proceed to visit the Cai Răng floating market, which is the liveliest in the whole region. Take in the beautiful scenery and the daily activities of the locals who live along the Mekong canals.

Next, you will roam through the village, see fruit gardens and a rice noodles making shop. Then, head back to the riverside for lunch before traveling back to Ho Chi Minh where you will arrive at around 5:00 PM with unforgettable memories.
